South Lakeland Action on Climate Change

North West

Waste into Wellbeing is a project of South Lakes Action on Climate Change with the aim to support the local community and reduce GH gas emissions.

Waste into Wellbeing (WiW) It uses surplus food to improve wellbeing in the Kendal area and is a volunteer-run initiative with 80+ volunteers, an oversight team and one paid food logistics coordinator. The project works to build social cohesion and improve wellbeing in Kendal and beyond, through the provision of and education on good food, and the development of an inclusive community. We use surplus productively to provide nutritious pay-as-you-can food and meals through a community larder, weekly lunches for vulnerable elderly residents (run in partnership with NHS ICC team) and Kendal People's Café. Our community outreach programme offers cooking support and inspiration to Kendal's residents, as well as providing work and life experience opportunities to students and vulnerable learners. Our Community Cook-along have become a social lifeline for some elderly and socially isolated individuals.
